Frequently asked questions
Answers to common questions about mapof.net, its maps and its data.
What is mapof.net?
A free atlas of interactive city maps. It has a page for 15,302 cities and 246 countries and territories, and its search covers 147,043 places worldwide.
How do I find a city?
Type the name into the search box on the homepage and pick it from the suggestions. Larger cities open their own page; smaller places are shown on a map directly on the homepage. You can also browse via the country list.
Is it free? Do I need an account?
Yes, it is free and there are no accounts or sign-ups.
Where does the data come from?
Place data comes from GeoNames (CC BY 4.0, refreshed October 2026); the maps are OpenStreetMap. See About for details.
Why does a population differ from the official figure?
Populations are the values recorded in GeoNames. Depending on the country they describe the city proper, a municipality or a wider area, and they are updated at different times, so they can differ from the latest census or from metropolitan-area figures.
Why are some places missing their own page?
To keep the site fast, individual pages exist for the 15,302 most populous cities (and at least five per country). All other places can still be found with the search box.
How is the distance between two cities calculated?
The distance calculator uses the great-circle (haversine) formula — the shortest distance over the Earth's surface, "as the crow flies". Road and flight distances are longer.
How is the local time shown?
Local times are calculated in your browser from each city's IANA time zone, so they follow your device clock and the time-zone rules built into your browser, including daylight saving time.
Can I use the maps or data?
GeoNames data is available under CC BY 4.0 and OpenStreetMap data under the ODbL, so you can use the underlying data from those sources with attribution. See the terms for the content of this site.
Do you use cookies or analytics?
We use Google Analytics to count visits. See the privacy policy for details and how to opt out.
